Follow Friday!!

Welcome to my very first Follow Friday! :D The question this week is.....

If you have, or would have a daughter, what book would you want your daughter to read?
I have a son currently...and I've never actually wanted a daugther.. But if I were to have a daugther... I would definately have her read The Diary of a Teenage Girl by Melody Carlson series. The series follows the life of Caitlin O'Connor, and the first book takes place when she's sixteen years old. It follows up until the last book where she gets married. My mom and I actually read this series together, and it helped me alot during those "troubling" teen years.

So let's start the following! :) Follow me, and then follow another blog on this list!

Trailer Thursday!!

I  saw a post on Once Upon A Twilight, called "Trailer Thursday" where she features a book trailer. I thought it was a good idea, especcially since I have so many books that I want to read...but I never get around to posting on Wednesday. (When the Waiting On Wednesday meme is).

So here is my, "Trailer Thursday!"

Matched
By: Ally Condie

Synopsis: Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.
The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

I cannot wait for this book to come out! The premise of the book reminds of The Givery by Lois Lowry, which is one of my favorite books. I aboslutely love the trailer, it makes me want to read the book even more! This book comes out on November 30, 2010! Make sure you pre-order it now!!

Friday Five #1

Well, I figured it was about time for another post... It's been long enough. >< My son keeps taking up all of my time, and I haven't been able to get any writing of reviews done, or even Eldest read!

I'm really enjoying Eldest so far, a lot more politics in the book than in Eragon...so it's a little more confusing. I love it the same though. If you haven't read the series, or heard of it...Check it out the world of Alagaesia here

Anyways, I decided that the easiest thing to do would be a meme! I see all the other blogs that I follow doing them all the time, and it seems easy enough! :)

I decided on Friday 5, hosted at Cinn's Friday 5, which is a livejournal, but that counts as a blog as well!

[01] Who is your favorite television character?
This question is really hard...I have a lot of favorite TV shows!! So, here’s my favorite character list, and the show they’re from.
  1.  Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother (He’s HILARIOUS)
  2. Jack McCoy from Law & Order (RIP L&O, but I love Jack McCoy!)
  3. Detective Robert Goren from Law & Order: Criminal Intent (He is an incredible actor. Loved his character, and the way they had him look at things nobody saw.)
  4. Clark Kent from Smallville (Tom Welling… He’s gorgeous. And who doesn’t love Superman??)
  5. Detective Lenny Briscoe from Law & Order (He was hilarious. May he rest in peace..)

[02] What was your best prank?
I’m not much of a prankster, and I’m really bad at it actually. But I’m a really good liar, if I put my mind to it. >< I convinced my entire class that my real name was Jessica-Ashley Hilary Elizabeth, instead of just Hilary. Everyone called me Jessica-Ashley for a year! Can you imagine?
[03] Where was it you traveled farthest in the last week?
All dressed up in green. :)
The farthest I have gone in the last week would probably be to church. J It’s about 15 mins from my house, shows you I haven’t gone very far from home with the new baby. :P
[04] When did you last take a fake sick day?
Psh. Mom’s don’t get fake sick days.
[05] Why did you wear that shirt today?
I wore my Action Network shirt today, because it was big, comfortable, and easy to remove to nurse. J
I had my son all dressed up in about three outfits today. I have to say this outfit, that he's pictured in to the right, is probably one of my favorites. He looks so cute in green!

Well, that's about all I have for today. You have a fabulous Friday(Saturday, because this is getting out late. Haha)!

First-Time Mom by Dr Kevin Leman Review

First-Time Mom
Dr. Kevin Leman
Tyndale Publishing
232 Pages
ISBN #: 0-8423-6039-5

Back Cover:
Wish your child came with an owner's manual?

First-Time Mom offers just that--practical guidance and insight on raising your first child--with the right touch of humor, too. Parenting expert Dr. Kevin Leman reveals how you can not only "get through" those first ten exhausting, transitional days, but also create a lifetime bond of emotional security. He explains the differences in the parenting styles of firstborns, middleborns and lastborns, helping you identify your own strengths and weaknesses.

Whether you've received your incredible gift through birth or adoption, becoming a parent is the most significant task you'll ever undertake. So raise your firstborn right--with confidence and a positive parenting experience. Then watch your child change the world!

My Review:

Every mother expecting or who just had (or adopted) their first child should read this book. I just had my son on Sept 25thand this book has calmed a lot of my worries. It’s not an instruction manual on how to raise perfect kids. It’s a book that will prepare/help you mentally understand and grasp how your world is going to be changed.

Dr. Kevin Leman is absolutely hysterical! One story in the novel I absolutely have to share, “One young man shared with me how his father constantly criticized him as he grew up. The dad either berated his son for being “as stubborn as a mule” or for simply being a rotten kid. The son couldn’t remember a single instance of encouragement.
Finally the boy had had enough. After once more being called a mule, he looked up the word in the dictionary.
“Dad” he asked, “Do you really think I’m a mule?”
“If you’re not a mule,” Dad answered, “then I don’t know what one is.”
“I was just wondering, because I looked up the word mule in a dictionary and it said a mule was an animal that had a horse for a mother and a jackass for a father.”
Says the son, “He never compared me to a mule again.””
There are little gems like that throughout the novel. Always something to make you laugh out loud!

I loved every chapter of this book, but found Chapter 5: The Top Ten Most Common First-Time Parenting Mistakes and Chapter 8: Here Comes the Firstborn: Birth Order Bang to be the most helpful. When the author talks about how birth order affects your personality, it opened my eyes to personalities in my own family. A true First born is the Firstborn of the family, but other children can carry Firstborn traits, depending on the amount of attention they receive from their parents. Dr. Kevin Leman himself says he’s raised three firstborns in his family!

My baby boy!!
Chapter 8 is about having your firstborn child and how your personality (because of your birth order) is going to clash with theirs. I’m the firstborn in my family, so my personality with my son is going to be the “Main Event” as the author calls it in the book. “The child that is of your own birth order is, in all probability, the child you’re most likely to bang heads with. And since firstborns like to be in charge—and only one person can be in charge—firstborn on firstborn tends to be the most toxic mix. ”

Now, my son is only 13 days old, so it’s a little hard to tell how we’ll react yet; but this is very obvious in my own family. My parents are both firstborns, and I constantly bumped heads with them. It wasn’t until recently that I was able to grow up, and understand things about relationships and parents that I couldn’t see before. I have become great friends with my mother, whom I clashed heads with a lot. Reading First-Time Mom helped ease my “common” parenting worries and prepared me for what’s to come!
